Yesterday, WWMT Channel 3 in Battle Creek presented a story on the Coldwater Branch Library which contained a number of errors. The most important issue to clear up is that lead paint was found last autumn only on the exterior walls of the part of the building that dates from 1886 (the main entrances going north toward US-12). The WWMT story makes it sound as though there is a health hazard inside the library. This is not the case.
We have tested for lead paint inside the building and have never found any. We have some paint peeling due to a leak that needs addressing, but this paint is only 4 years old. There is no reason to worry about exposure to lead paint inside the library.
Please direct any questions or concerns you may have to our Library Director, Evette Atkin, either online or by phone at 517-278-2341 extension 16.
